Web Literacy: Chapt. 2

My chapter dealt with Internet searching. I learned that most people tend to use the first or second listing on Google. I have to admit that I fall into that category. It was surprising to learn that companies actually pay money to get top spots. Every time someone clicks on their site it can cost them anywhere from .30 to $3.00! I thought, “ if you don’ t like a company, just spend all day clicking on their site and rack up their bill. If you like a company, then be sure to only click the minimum.”

The chapter gives good ideas about using a variety of search engines to find the information you are looking for. The example used is if you were looking for tools, you would go to Hardware store. If you were looking for office supplies you wouldn’t go to a farm and ranch store. Bottom line, search smarter.

Chapter5

What are the pros and cons of online learning? It can help students be more engaged. It gets them out of the textbook. However, it can make it difficult to to pick up and move. I mean you can take a book into the hallway with out worrying about loosing connection.
Online may not work for some kids to do at home.

I do believe the education of the future will involve on line learning.

Chapter4

How do we construct knowledge through primary sources. Teaching kids internet safety will help this area. For example, ".edu" or ".gov" will be closer to primary source than ".com". It is the teachers responsibility to set up the environment so that he kids can learn. Have the websites set up for the kids to go to, but allow them to make the choice.
